About Me

Hi, and welcome to my website.

Since you’re here, probably looking into finding a piano teacher, I’ll tell you a little about my credentials.

I’m a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM), and hold the Permanent Professional Certificate in three areas of music: Piano, Theory, and Musicology (History).

I am also the State Certification Chair for MTNA (Music Teachers’ National Association), and on the Board of the state-affiliated organization, DSMTA (Delaware Music Teachers’ Association), where I am a long-time member with Emeritus status.

My formal training includes a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance, and graduate degrees in both Piano Performance and Theory/Composition from UNT and the University of Oklahoma, where I was fortunate to have as my mentors the legendary teachers Dr. William Race, Stefan Bardas, and Celia Mae Bryant, and for my composition teachers Dr. Frederic Fisher (whose teacher was Nadia Boulanger), and Michael Hennagin (whose teacher was Aaron Copland). I have also completed 60+ credit hours above the Master’s degree and hold an Ab.D in Music Theory.

Now a teacher of music for over forty years, the credentials on my resume include having taught piano, as well as classes in theory, pedagogy, and music literature, at UNT, the University of Oklahoma, and the Wilmington Music School (now The Music School of Delaware).  I have also served as an adjudicator for NFMC, the National Guild of Piano Teachers, and for state-affiliated MTNA auditions and competitions in several states, including Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware.  Currently I maintain a private studio (Hockessin Music Studio, Inc.) which I limit to fifty students.  I am happy to report that the students I teach consistently receive high honors in local, regional, statewide, and national piano auditions and competitions.
